Great Eagle Hotel prepares for transition to Langham Hotel, Hong Kong

Travel News Asia 27 August 2003

The Great Eagle Hotel in Hong Kong is preparing for a new era as the Langham Hotel, Hong Kong from October 1st this year - and is releasing special accommodation packages to celebrate.

The name change follows the announcement earlier this year by owning company Great Eagle Hotels International that the group would change its name to Langham Hotels International. The Langham name comes from the historic Langham Hotel, London (now known as the Langham Hilton) which was purchased by Great Eagle in 1996 and subsequently further upgraded.

It also follows a substantial US$35m upgrading of the Hong Kong property over the past four years, which has resulted in the creation of an elegant European-style sanctuary with a contemporary twist.

The Langham Hotel is legendary, its name synonymous with gracious hospitality and fine living for over a hundred years. Opened back in 1865 by the Prince of Wales, The Langham was not only London’s first “grand” hotel, but also the city’s largest building at the time.

The Langham Hotel, Hong Kong will remain the flagship hotel of the newly renamed group, just as The Great Eagle Hotel was the flagship of the portfolio of hotels owned by Great Eagle Hotels International.

General Manager, Nigel Roberts, welcomes the new name, saying: “The transition to the Langham name provides the ideal platform and additional momentum for us to continue upholding the high standards we have set for ourselves among the growing portfolio of luxury hotels within this group. It also offers us a marvellous opportunity to generate additional awareness and continue to raise the profile of this wonderful hotel.”

The Langham Hotel is ideally located in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon in the heart of one of Hong Kong’s most vibrant shopping and entertainment districts.

Each of the 462 rooms and 25 suites has been luxuriously renovated and equipped with the latest technology. Also part of the renovations were 12 sumptuous “Langham Suites” designed as a contemporary reflection of the golden years of grand British hospitality as typified by the Langham Hotel.

Earlier this year, British newspaper, The Sunday Times ranked the Langham Suites among the world’s ‘Top 10 High-tech Hotel Rooms’ and cited the rooms for being “one of the few with en-suite, broadband internet access, 37” Plasma TV and DVD surround sound home theatre to create the “dream home away from home”. These ultra luxurious signature suites also feature the hotel’ new signature “yume” beds. The name “yume’ is Japanese for dream.

To celebrate a new era, the Langham will launch a series of accommodation packages including “The Langham Experience´ which features a two-night three-day stay in a Langham Suite at US$560 net per person, based on double occupancy and available until December 31st 2004. And the “Asian Experience” which invites discerning travellers to discover two great Asian cities in one luxurious 6-night package at US$1520 nett. This includes three nights in Hong Kong at the Langham’s Club Floor and three nights at the award-winning Sukhothai Bangkok, available until March 31st 2004 and subject to availability.
