Per Aquum Resorts & Spas to open their Second Island in the Maldives

Travel News Asia 27 November 2003

Located in the North Male Atoll in the Maldives, the beautiful island of Huvafen Fushi is home to Per Aquum Resorts & Spas' second stunning luxury resort, set to open in March 2004.

The word 'Huvafen' is the Dhivehi (local language) translation meaning 'Dream', 'Fushi' is one of the many Dhivehi words for island.

In a setting beyond compare, and featuring some of the largest rooms in the Maldives, the resort's 44 'island chic' bungalows combine contemporary design with traditional Maldivian style. Each of the bungalows have their own secluded oasis and freshwater pool, and have been fitted out with every conceivable luxury, including oversize beds - a central focus of the rooms on the island, an Espresso machine, private bar, L'Occitane amenities, Frette linen, day beds, plasma LCD screen and Bose surround sound system with DVD player.

Huvafen Fushi's 18 Beach Bungalows each have their own private beach, whereas guests staying in one of the 26 Ocean and Lagoon Bungalows can step straight down into the crystal clear water from their private deck.

Eight of the Beach Bungalows, facing the pristine lagoon, feature an exhilarating plunge pool and open air waterfall shower, another eight include a beautiful private Sala with plunge pool in the courtyard, while located on a select stretch of beach, two sumptuous Beach Pavilions 600 sqm provide the ultimate indulgence. The Pavilions' two spacious sleeping areas feature custom-designed beds with oversized open-air showers and deep baths, and an open plan living area with gourmet kitchen and bar creates an inviting indoor/outdoor ambience. A large outdoor area and deck leads guests to a private infinity pool, Jacuzzi, outdoor lounge area and an intimate dining setting. To top it all off, a personal Thakuru (butler) is on hand 24-hours a day, to cater for guests' every whim.

The 12 spacious Ocean Bungalows overlook miles of the vast Indian Ocean and showcase an oversized deck housing a freshwater Infinity Pool, designer sala, as well a glass floored lounge area to luxuriate in in-room spa treatments.

For the last word in understated opulence, two sensational Ocean Pavilions with luxurious amenities and service similar to the Beach Pavilion sit 200 meters out into the ocean, facing the sunset. The Pavilions are a secluded enclave, with individual wooden walkways and an entrance opening onto a private infinity pool, which blends naturally with the stunning blue horizon. A huge split-level deck hosts two alluring Salas and a spacious dining area, where guests can have their dedicated Thakuru prepare an intimate dinner under the stars.

Taking advantage of the stunning Indian Ocean, Per Aquum will be showcasing the world's first underwater Aquum Spa at the Huvafen Fushi. Offering sweeping views of blue splendour, the island provides the utmost privacy. The colours and textures of the surrounding natural beauty of the Maldives has provided Per Aquum with all the inspiration needed for minimalist yet naturally modern architectural design of it's property, with sand walkways that snake through virgin vegetation and expansive living areas decorated with cutting edge design for those used to the highest standards in comfort and stylish living.

If that were not enough to tempt you the resort will also offer a myriad of restaurants and recreational facilities.

The primary concept the Master Chef and his brigade have in place is to grow and create as much produce possible on the island pesticide, preservative and chemical free. See the chef sun drying tomatoes, picking herbs from the garden and rolling home made pasta along with other items that in normal circumstances are imported. Personalised destination dining choices, the tea selection and cooking classes will add to the over all pleasure of dining and wining on the island. Guests can sample the fresh taste sensations in 'Celsius' offering a-la-carte light & healthy cuisine, with a strong emphasis on using the local produce and cooking styles.

'Salt' where the focus of menus is towards the abundance of seafood available in the Maldives with all seafood being caught daily and delivered by local fisherman, who line fish only. The cuisine at 'Salt' leans towards Mediterranean with an influence of South East Asia and Australia. 'Salt' is situated over water with an ambience of complete calm in a very private environment where you can dine under a moon lit sky.

'Raw' is combining 'spa cuisine' and 'raw-cuisine' to provide guests who like to really take care of their bodies with fresh, clean flavours and fat free ingredients. All menus at Huvafen Fushi are focused on healthy, light meals, however at 'Raw', the Chef plans to take this one step further by also offering to design a personalised menu in conjunction with the Spa Manager to help guests maintain a complete balance of food and exercise whilst on the island. A juice bar is open during the day for those who need refuelling. For a taste of tranquility, one can indulge in a designer cocktail at 'UMbar', set on the water's edge.

An unsurpassed selection of wines, meticulously sourced from all corners of the world by the island's Master of Wine can be sampled in the Underground Wine Cellar, where for those who enjoy all things vinum and want the ultimate indulgence; dinner at the 'Round Table' inside Huvafen's underground wine cellar is highly recommended. This will be a journey of culinary delights matched with wine, art and music by the Master Chef and Island Sommelier.

Those seeking the utmost in luxury pampering can immerse themselves in Aquum Spa. This holistic haven will provide a rejuvenating encounter with water, like no other spa has done in the world, by offering a range of treatments in the two underwater treatment rooms or in one of the six over water treatment areas available.

The spa menu is created using Elemis products which are non-petrochemical and use the finest of medicinal plants, herbs, seaweed extracts and oils. Added to this, Aquum Spa have introduced signature rituals and treatments of their own, utilising natural tonics and elixirs made from the life-giving properties of fresh seawater, nutritious sea plants and minerals. From the pure waters that cleanse and detoxify to the nutritious ingredients that feed and nourish, the choices are many. Mind-soothing aromatherapy, body nourishing scrubs, massages of many styles, sophisticated face and eye renewal together with eastern rejuvenation rituals. Facilities include sauna, steam and Jacuzzi with an ice room to cool the body, over water Yoga Pavilion where Yoga, Tai Chi and Meditation is offered, and an over water gymnasium where world class personal trainer's can assist to help guests achieve their target goal.

Transcend in the 'Lonu Veyo', a natural salt flotation pool, the first of its kind in the Maldives, or the adventurous and active can enjoy the over-water gymnasium, scuba diving, water sports, infinity swimming pool or one of the fantastic range of excursions, including sunset fishing on a traditional Dhoni, big game fishing and sandbank snorkelling.

Relaxation and self-indulgence is what Huvafen Fushi is all about, a place where every wish is fulfilled. On arriving in the Maldives, guests heading for their sensual escape to paradise can choose to skim across the azure Indian Ocean, for a spectacular 25-minute luxury speedboat ride from Mal International Airport, or take a 15-minute chartered seaplane journey across the atoll to a destination beyond compare.
