Cyprus Airways appointed official carrier for Great Britains Olympic team

Travel News Asia 16 November 2003

Cyprus Airways has been appointed as the official carrier for Great Britains Olympic team in its quest for success at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.

Cyprus Airways was selected in part because its network services the UK, Cyprus and Greece with high flight frequencies.

Cyprus Airways will now have exclusive marketing rights, within its category, throughout the UK to promote its involvement with Team GB and the British Olympic Movement.

The sponsorship package includes special facilities and attractive rates for all Team GB athletes and officials to the British Olympic Associations (BOA) preparation camp in Cyprus plus travel on to the Olympic Games in Athens. The airline is also committed to assisting athletes and officials traveling to the camp in Cyprus for individual sports training camps in the run up to the Games.

Simon Clegg, Chief Executive of the BOA and Team GBs Chef de Mission for Athens 2004, said: Todays announcement is the final critical component in the BOAs aspirations to establish a permanent warm weather training facility in the Mediterranean. It will benefit not only Team GB as it flies to and from Athens next year, but also the Olympic governing bodies as they make use of the outstanding arrangements which have been put in place in Cyprus. This partnership will ensure the best possible preparations for Team GB athletes in the build up to the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

The Cyprus Airways fleet also includes its subsidiary EuroCypria, based in Cyprus and associated airline Hellas Jet, based in Greece. EuroCypria and Hellas Jet6 boast totally new aircraft, whilst Cyprus Airways has one of the most modern fleets with the addition of the new Airbus A330-200. Cyprus Airways operates 29 scheduled flights per week from Larnaca to four major UK airports, whilst EuroCypria operates 20 weekly flights to 13 UK airports. Hellas Jet offers twice-daily scheduled flights from Athens to London.

Constantinos Loizides, Chairman of Cyprus Airways, said: We are very proud to be entrusted with such a high profile duty of transporting Britains top athletes to their training camps in Cyprus and next year, to the Olympic Games in Athens.

Not only does this partnership highlight the synergy between Cypriots and the British, it also recognizes our airlines excellent flight connections between the UK and Cyprus and between Cyprus and Greece. We look forward to working closely with the British Olympic Association and Team GB and wish them every success for next years games.
