While Four Seasons has not given a reason for its withdrawal from Syria, the move follows recent US sanctions imposed on prominent Syrian businessman Samer Foz who is believed to be one of the main owners of the property.

The hotel is expected to remain open, but will operate under a new name and is no longer part of Four Seasons' impressive portfolio of luxury hotels.

In July 2011, Steven Howard of TravelNewsAsia.com had the opportunity to interview the Head Chef of the famous Al Halabi Restaurant at the Four Seasons Hotel Damascus, Mr. Mohamad Helal and his Assistant Chef - Mr. Mohamad Moussa, to ask them what Syrian, and in particular Aleppean, cuisine is all about.
