Skal International has partnered with Clean the World, one of the largest recyclers of discarded hotel guestroom soaps in the world, by agreeing to promote its programme as one of the organization’s international sustainability initiatives.

Under the terms of the agreement, Skal International will encourage its approximately 5,300 hotel members to work alongside Clean the World in the collection and recycling of used soaps in order to help fight the global spread of preventable diseases.

According to the World Health Organization, each day thousands of children around the world die from hygiene related diseases that can be prevented by washing with bar soap.

By joining hands with leading hotel groups, Clean the World also helps protect the environment by diverting waste from incinerators and landfills by repurposing the millions of bars of guestroom soap discarded daily.

“The Skal Mission is to support a responsible tourism industry and its belief in Sustainable Tourism actively fosters appreciation and stewardship of the natural, cultural and historic resources and special places by local inhabitants, the tourism industry, governments and visitors. It is tourism which is viable over the long term, because it results in a net benefit for social, economic, natural and cultural environments of the area in which it takes place,” said Skal International World President, Karine Coulanges.

Shailesh Adhav, Managing Director for Clean the World in Asia, added, “It is wonderful to have Skal International’s support for our life-saving and environmental cause, especially at this time of great need. In the Philippines there is an urgent requirement for life-saving hygiene in the fallout of the devastating Typhoon Haiyan, As such, we have dispatched more than 10 tons of soap and many thousands of hand sanitizer packs that are absolutely essential for health and sanitation during this terrible time.”

In total, Clean the World has created over 14 million new sanitized soap bars that have been delivered to underprivileged communities, families, and children in 70 countries. “Every day we do more, and partnering with Skal International is truly humbling – we sincerely appreciate its commitment and leadership,” said Adhav.

Clean the World has partnerships with some of the biggest names in the hospitality industry including Sands China, Mandarin Oriental, Hilton, Starwood, Marriott, Disney, Carlson, and InterContinental Hotels Group.
