STR Reports Global Hotel Pipelines for January 2013

According to the January 2013 STR Global Construction Pipeline Report, Asia Pacific hotel development pipeline comprises 1,810 hotels totalling 391,002 rooms.

The total active pipeline data includes projects in the In Construction, Final Planning and Planning stages but does not include projects in the Pre-Planning stage.

Among the countries in the region, China reported the largest number of rooms under construction, ending the month with 134,631 rooms in construction.

Four other countries also reported a significant number of rooms under construction: India (25,709 rooms); Indonesia (11,712 rooms); the Philippines (7,242 rooms); and Malaysia (6,910 rooms).

Caribbean/Mexico

The Caribbean/Mexico hotel development pipeline comprises 126 hotels totaling 20,436 rooms.

Among the Chain Scale segments, the Luxury segment accounted for the largest number of rooms in the region's total active pipeline, with 33.9% and 6,933 rooms.

Three other segments each made up more than 10% of rooms in the total active pipeline: the Upscale segment (19.4% with 3,958 rooms); the Unaffiliated segment (17.9% with 3,658 rooms); and the Upper Midscale segment (15.9% with 3,259 rooms).

The Luxury segment (41.7% with 4,109 rooms) and the Unaffiliated segment (19.9% with 1,967 rooms) each made up the largest number of rooms under construction in the region.

C./S. America

The Central/South America hotel development pipeline comprises 239 hotels totalling 36,936 rooms.

In January 2013, two hotels with 300 rooms opened in the region. In 2013, 85 hotels with 12,746 rooms are expected to open.

The Midscale segment is expected to open the most rooms (31 hotels with 3,590 rooms) during the rest of 2013, followed by the Upscale segment (17 hotels with 2,565 rooms) and the Upper Midscale segment (16 hotels with 2,379 rooms).

In 2014, 101 hotels are expected to open in the region with 16,085 rooms. The Upper Midscale segment is expected to open the most rooms with 27 hotels comprising 4,083 rooms, followed by the Upscale segment (23 hotels with 4,046 rooms) and the Midscale segment (28 hotels with 3,340 rooms).

Europe

The Europe hotel development pipeline comprises 869 hotels totalling 145,303 rooms.

The total active pipeline data includes projects in the In Construction, Final Planning and Planning stages but does not include projects in the Pre-Planning stage.

Among the major markets in the region, Istanbul, Turkey, reported the largest number of rooms under construction in January with 4,228 rooms.

Five other markets reported more than 1,000 rooms under construction: Moscow, Russia (2,523 rooms); London, United Kingdom (2,181 rooms); Berlin, Germany (2,077 rooms); Amsterdam, Netherland (1,775 rooms); and Vienna, Austria (1,061 rooms).

Middle East/Africa

The Middle East/Africa hotel development pipeline comprises 480 hotels totalling 118,023 rooms.

Among the countries in the region, Oman reported the largest expected supply growth (+63.9%) if all 4,613 rooms in the country's total active pipeline open.

Five other countries reported expected room growth of more than 30%: Saudi Arabia (+53.2% with 27,783); Algeria (43.9% with 1,887 rooms); Qatar (+39.6% to 6,205 rooms); United Arab Emirates (+33.6% with 31,827 rooms); and Kuwait (+33.5% to 2,069 rooms).
