Anantara Bali Uluwatu Resort & Spa Appoints New GM

Anantara Bali Uluwatu Resort & Spa, a new cliff-top resort on Bali’s secluded southern coast, has appointed Mr. Stephan Winkler as General Manager.

A German national, born in 1962, Stephan studied languages before entering the hospitality industry. Now an industry veteran of 30 years, Stephan started his hotel career in 1982 at Munich’s landmark hotel, the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski. During the early years of his career, Stephan worked for hotels such as the Ritz in Paris and the Vier Jahreszeiten in Hamburg, then following Germany’s reunification, he was appointed Director of Sales & Marketing at the Bristol Hotel Kempinski in Berlin in 1990.

In December 1994 Stephan moved to Asia for the first time as Director of Rooms for a number of five star hotels in Hong Kong and Jakarta. 1998 took him back to Munich as Director of Sales & Marketing of the then legendary Hotel Rafael, one of Germany’s first true ‘boutique’ hotels.

Stephan joined Starwood Hotels & Resorts in July 2001, as Deputy General Manager of Sheraton Heliopolis Hotel, Towers & Casino in Cairo, a position he held for three years, followed by his first General Manager position in 2003 at Lombok’s Sheraton Senggigi Beach Resort. Having become quite a pre-opening specialist he opened Sheraton Hua Hin Resort & Spa, followed by The Westin Pune Koregaon Park in India and The Westin Macau Resort.

Now back in Indonesia, Stephan is at the helm of the new 74-suite Anantara Bali Uluwatu Resort.

Apart from hotel and family life, little time is left for his other interests which include literature, the arts and golf. Stephan speaks several languages incl. French, Arabic and Bahasa Indonesia. He is married with two sons.
