AirAsia to Transfer All Flight Operations to Don Muang Airport in Bangkok

AirAsia has confirmed that it will transfer all its operations from the newer Suvarnabhumi International Airport to Bangkok's old International Airport, Don Muang, by 1 October 2012.

The move will take place despite some concerns regarding transit times between the older airport and Suvarnabhumi International Airport, the potential confusion for travellers - especially those coming in or leaving on international flights with other airlines, and in the knowledge that late last year Don Muang airport was completely flooded.

Mr. Tassapon Bijleveld, CEO of Thai AirAsia, said, “The uncongested Don Muang Airport is sure to prove a benefit to AirAsia when it boosts its fleet of Airbus A320s to a total of 48 and welcomes more customers. The airport’s location also makes it conducive to further travel. Prospective travelers should have confidence in what Don Muang has to offer.”

AirAsia has scheduled 1 October 2012 as the date when all of its services will be based at Don Muang Airport. This means that all AirAsia flights, regardless of whether it is a Thai AirAsia flight or not, will operate to and from Don Muang Airport.

While the two airports are not that far apart in actual distance - roughly 38kms, travel times between the two can be highly unpredictable, and travellers should give themselves at least an hour, possibly more depending on the time of the journey, to be sure to arrive on time.

The airline has said that passengers who are affected by the switch to Don Muang Airport, can alter their flights by either choosing another travel date on the same route either 7 days before or after their original travel date, at no additional cost. Passengers also have an option to convert the paid flight into credit shell available to be used within the next 90 days.

The change options are only available to affected passengers who purchased their tickets before 26 June 2012 whose travel dates are from 1 October 2012 onwards. Terms and conditions apply.
