LAN to Increase Flights Between Australia and Chile

Travel News Asia Latest Travel News Podcasts Videos Thursday, 23 February 2012

LAN Airlines is to increase its services between Sydney and Santiago, Chile, from daily to ten per week, with three additional flights to be offered from 26 March 2012, through a new codeshare arrangement with fellow oneworld alliance airline Qantas.

LAN will offer Economy and Business Class seats on the new nonstop services, which will depart Sydney every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday morning as LAN flight LA 806, returning as LA 807 every Saturday, Monday and Wednesday.

“South America is one of the world’s fastest-growing markets for both leisure and business travel, and Santiago is one of the most important destinations for travellers from Australia,” said Patricio Aylwin, LAN’s Managing Director for Australia, New Zealand and Asia. “By linking up with Qantas on the Sydney-Santiago route, we can improve access to South America for the rapidly-increasing number of Australians visiting the continent by offering more flights and the best onward connections. South America has never been closer.”

The new codeshare arrangement will enable both airlines to offer seats on 10 flights per week to South America, with LAN already operating daily one-stop service with Airbus A340-300 aircraft and the three Qantas flights to be operated with Boeing 747-400s.

LAN’s daily one-stop flights from Sydney to Santiago, via Auckland, New Zealand, connect to a network of over 80 South American destinations.

Recently, LAN upgraded its schedules on key routes beyond Santiago to improve connections between flights arriving from Australia and New Zealand, and onward services to major South American destinations including Buenos Aires in Argentina, Peru’s capital Lima, the iconic Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro and a range of points in Chile.

LAN also offers through its affiliates services to major South American tourist destinations including Cusco, Peru, better-known as the gateway to the ancient Inca ruins in Machu Picchu, the spectacular Iguassu Falls on the border of Brazil and Argentina, the mystical Chilean territory of Easter Island; Ecuador’s extraordinary Galapagos Islands; and the port city of Ushuaia, Argentina, the southernmost point in South America and the world’s main starting point for cruises to Antarctica.

For travellers from Australia, the new codeshare between LAN and Qantas will provide convenient new connections and feeder networks at both ends of the Sydney-Santiago route, with LAN offering an important network throughout South America and Qantas throughout Australia.

LAN’s current flight LA 800 departs Sydney daily at 09:40, flying via Auckland to arrive in Santiago by early afternoon. LAN’s Airbus A340-300 aircraft are configured to seat 260 passengers in a two-class cabin – 42 in Premium Business Class and 218 in Economy Class.

The new nonstop flight, LA 806, will leave Sydney at 10:45 each Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.

Passengers from Australian destinations other than Sydney can connect with LAN flights either in Sydney or Auckland.
