Travel News Asia Latest Travel News Podcasts Videos Wednesday, 3 November 2010

China Southern Airlines has launched thrice weekly flights between Guangzhou and Brisbane.

In addition to this new route, the airline has also boosted flight frequency between Guangzhou and Sydney as well as Guangzhou and Melbourne.

China Southern will now offer twice daily service between Guangzhou and Sydney (up from the previous daily service) and daily service between Guangzhou and Melbourne.

The airline will use Airbus A330 aircraft on these routes, offering First Class, Business Class, Premium Economy and Economy inflight service.

Mr. Tan Wan’geng, President & CEO of China Southern Airlines, said, “China has become Australia’s second largest source market in terms of economic value and fourth largest in terms of visitor arrivals and in response to this growing market, China Southern is pleased to proactively increase its service between our hub in Guangzhou and the Australia marketplace. In 2010, as China Southern turned its focus on becoming an international network-oriented airline, our Australia routes and our great connection service in Guangzhou have led to this rapid expansion of service.”

Mr. Andrew McEvoy, Managing Director of Tourism Australia, added, “Since the Strategic Partnership between Tourism Australia and China Southern Airlines was signed in May, I am glad to see this first phase of the plans – the inaugural Guangzhou-Brisbane service and increased frequency to Sydney and Melbourne is commenced. China is and will continue to be one of Australia’s most important markets, we have seen visitor numbers from China grow by 23% for the first eight months of the year and we will achieve a record 401,000, worth $3.1 billon. In longer term, China is expected to grow to 783,000 visitors in 2019 worth $5.5 billion. So we greatly appreciate the role of China Southern Airlines in assisting us to not only realize but also potentially to exceed the forecasts and we look forward to mutual success in the future and further expansion of services to Australia.”
