Etihad Airways has sponsored a team of British students from Offscreen Expeditions, a UK-based non-profit organisation, to fly to Pakistan to assist in developing UK-Pakistan relations.

The team of students, aged 18 to 21, explored the North Western region of Pakistan in hopes of further understanding the country’s culture and customs.

The team of photographers, artists, musicians and a fashion designer embarked on a mission to go beyond common misconceptions about Pakistan held in the UK and countries all across the world, which the team labelled: ‘cricket, curry and terrorism’.

The team met with students, artists, social entrepreneurs, religious scholars and politicians.

“We are delighted to work with Offscreen Expeditions on this project,” said Anne Tullis, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability at Etihad Airways. “At the crossroads between east and west, Etihad is well placed to promote cross cultural exchange and understanding between people and nations. Sending this team of talented students is a perfect way to encourage and support the much needed cultural dialogue and awareness and we look forward to witnessing the positive outcome the project will bring.”

The students have acquired skills for social action and have created a multimedia travelogue of their experiences which will be accessed through offscreenexpedition.com from 8 November 2010, engaging thousands of people across Britain and all over the world.

Interactive and online education resources will also be made available for younger visitors to the website.

Expedition leader Jamie Buchanan-Dunlop said, “Etihad Airways’ invaluable support has made it possible for six students from the UK to explore Pakistan on their own terms, which will enable them to share their experiences with others around the world. At a time when increased understanding between cultures is more and more important, Etihad has made this journey possible.”
