Curfew in Bangkok and Surrounding Provinces

Travel News Asia Latest Travel News Podcasts Videos Wednesday, 19 May 2010 updated 25 May 2010

A curfew has been declared by the Thai government for Bangkok and the 23 other provinces currently under State of Emergency in Thailand.

The curfew is expected to end on Friday 28 May 2010. It is unclear how effective it is, what real purpose it serves, nor why Pattaya - which relies heavily on the bar industry - is now exempt.

The CRES has proposed to continue the curfew from midnight to 4am until 1 June 2010.

Nobody is allowed on the streets or out of their homes / hotels etc. during that time, unless they have permission from the authorities.

If travellers have flights between the times above, we strongly suggest that they try to get to the airport before the curfew is in place. The official line is that travellers can still go to the airport, but will need to present their tickets and passports to officers, so if you have e-tickets it may save time to print them out, and be sure to keep these documents where they can easily be accessed. For those arriving, a few extra buses have been prepared as there is likely to be a lack of taxis etc during the curfew times.

Those that break the curfew risk being arrested.
