Finnair Reports September 2010 Traffic

Travel News Asia Latest Travel News Podcasts Videos Monday, 11 October 2010

Finnair's traffic grew in September 2010 by less than 1% when compared with September the previous year. In scheduled traffic, growth was nearly 3%. Asian traffic grew by just under 6%, European traffic by 1.5% and domestic traffic by under 1%.

Unit revenue for Finnair's scheduled passenger traffic rose by just over 23% in July-September compared with the previous year. The most significant factor in this is strengthening growth of business travel demand in markets outside Finland.

“Business travel demand has grown, which has boosted price levels. Last year we sold flight tickets at campaign prices to support load factors. Since the spring, demand has gradually recovered,” said Finnair's SVP Communications Christer Haglund. “Finnair's position in the world is strengthening. In August, for the first time in Finnair's history, the Finnish sales unit was not the company's largest; the Japanese unit sold more.”

The passenger load factor in scheduled traffic declined by around two percentage points, but remained at a good level of more than 74%. In Asian traffic, the load factor was nearly 83%.

The amount of cargo carried by Finnair grew by more than 41% compared with September 2009.

Leisure traffic declined in September by just over 11% compared with the previous September, due to tour operators outside the Finnair Group transferring to use their own flight capacity.

Of Finnair's flights, 90% arrived on schedule in September, which represents a decline of one percentage point from September last year. In scheduled traffic, the punctuality was at nearly 91%, which was one and a half percentage points lower compared with the previous September.
