Travel News Asia Latest Travel News Podcasts Friday, 23 January 2009

Marriott officially opened the 658-room Hong Kong SkyCity Marriott Hotel on Thursday. The new hotel is Marriott International’s fifth hotel in Hong Kong but its first Marriott branded property.

Marriott is managing the hotel under an agreement with the owner, Union Sky Holdings, a partnership between Shun Tak Holdings, and a joint venture of Dragages Hong Kong and GR8 Leisure Concept. It is Shun Tak Holdings’ first direct foray into the Hong Kong hotel sector.

More than 300 guests witnessed the official handover of the property by owners Pansy Ho, Managing Director of Shun Tak Holdings, Nicolas Borit, Managing Director of Dragages Hong Kong and Marcus Lee, President of GR8 Leisure Concept to Craig Smith, Senior Vice President for Asia Pacific of Marriott International.

Officiating guests included Margaret Fong, Tourism Commissioner for the Hong Kong Government SAR, Anthony Lau, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Tourism Board and Stanley Hui Hon-chung, Chief Executive Officer of the Airport Authority Hong Kong.

Strategically located adjacent to the Hong Kong International Airport and the Sky Pier ferry terminal, which is scheduled to open later this year, and connected via a covered footbridge to AsiaWorld-Expo - a 70,000 square meter international exhibition center and convention center including an arena - the hotel’s world class facilities and services help boost the attraction of the area.

As the major investor of the joint venture, Ms. Pansy Ho spoke of the vision for the hotel on behalf of all owner-investors “Today, a new chapter is to be written, in terms of what Hong Kong’s airport experience has to offer- the perfect amalgamation of top quality ‘MICE, Leisure and Transportation’ services completed by the opening of the SkyCity Marriott Hotel. Though a new-joiner, Shun Tak is by no means new to the hotel industry, having introduced some of the first international 5-star hotel brands into Macau some half a century ago. We are also the operator of TurboJET air-sea ferries out of the Sky Pier ferry terminal, servicing transit passengers into Mainland and Macau. Our partner, Dragages, is renowned for developing and managing large-scale infrastructures such as that of the AsiaWorld-Expo, adding to the partnership valuable insights in laying out the strategic foundation of this new venture. Combining the strengths of both partners, we hope to make solid contributions to our community and economy.”

The Hong Kong SkyCity Marriott Hotel comprises 658 guest rooms over 11 floors, including 1 presidential suite, 32 suites and 119 executive rooms. All rooms are tripled-glazed and feature Marriott’s new bedding package and the latest in-room technology with unique views of the ocean or golf course.

The hotel is also one of the only properties in Hong Kong to offer guests convenient golf packages with access to the adjacent SkyCity Nine Eagles golf course, and is the first to boast the territory’s only Marriott spa experience, the Quan Spa. It also offers an extensively equipped health club, including an impressive 27-meter indoor pool, sauna, steam rooms, jacuzzi and a 24-hour gym.

In addition, Hong Kong SkyCity Marriott Hotel offers spacious and flexible meeting and banqueting space of over 1,300 square meters (14,000 square feet). Within a separate venue adjacent to the hotel, the SkyCity Grand Ballroom provides a large area of 650 square meters (7,000 square feet). This venue also provides a unique offering of a private entrance from the main hotel entrance and accommodates bespoke branding opportunities for conferences and events. There are an additional 10 meeting rooms and boardrooms with a total of 640 square meters of meeting space (6,900 square feet).

With six dining options, guests at the hotel can select from a variety of cuisines to satisfy their every taste and mood. Velocity Bar and Grill is a modern sports bar. Chinese delicacies can be found at Marriott’s famous Man Ho Restaurant offering Cantonese specialties as well as one private dining room upon request. Asian fare such as seared Japanese beef and soba noodles can be found at the Red Zen while the SkyCity Bistro offers all day dining of international favorites. Relax at The Lounge with entertainment and a view of the South China Sea while sipping freshly prepared drinks. For caffeine enthusiasts, Java+ is an ideal option for busy business travelers for quick take away treats to accompany that perfect cup of espresso or latte.

The property is easily accessible to some of Hong Kong’s most appealing shopping districts and sights including the CityGate Outlets, Ngong Ping 360 cable car and the Tian Tan “Giant” Buddha, while only being a 28-minute express train ride from Hong Kong’s Central district.

The hotel’s General Manager is Mr Bob Jensch.
