Radisson Plaza Hotel Sydney Wins Sustainable Operations Award

The Radisson Plaza Hotel Sydney won the Sustainable Operations Award at the 2009 Hotel Investment Conference Asia Pacific awards ceremony held in Hong Kong earlier this month.

The Sustainable Hotel Awards was launched two years ago to recognise hotels in the Asia Pacific region that demonstrate exemplary environmentally sustainable best practices. The awards aim to recognise the best of the best, with only three hotels in the entire Asia Pacific region being honoured each year.

The 362-room Radisson Plaza Hotel Sydney, operating within a heritage-listed building in Sydney’s Central Business District was acknowledged for successfully executing a number of initiatives to enhance water, waste and energy resource management throughout the hotel.

Radisson Plaza Hotel Sydney has championed the use of innovative technology to help improve resource efficiency. In particular, the hotel was one of the first in Australia to introduce Microfibre Cleaning Technology and in doing so has saved more than 1 million litres of water annually. The hotel also works with EarthPower, Australia’s first regional waste-to-energy facility that collects and converts food waste to green energy and nutrient rich-fertiliser.

In addition to the many initiatives already implemented, the Radisson Plaza Hotel Sydney has also partnered with Green Globe; the global benchmarking and certification programme for sustainable travel and tourism, achieving silver certification.

We are dedicated to making the right decisions today in creating programmes and policies that help minimise the negative impact on the environment while continuing to build customer loyalty,” explained Peter Tudehope, general manager, Radisson Plaza Hotel Sydney.

Radisson Plaza Hotel Sydney is also Carlson’s first Asia Pacific hotel to have attained the Green Globe silver certification. Another seven Carlson hotels are currently undergoing accreditation.
