Rezidor signs Two New Hotels in South Africa

Travel News Asia Latest Travel News Podcasts Thursday, 11 June 2009

The Rezidor Hotel Group, one of the fastest growing hotel companies in the world, has signed management contracts on two hotels in South Africa, the Hotel Missoni Cape Town and the Park Inn Sandton.

The Park Inn Sandton, a 270 room-property, is scheduled to open in 2010, while the Hotel Missoni Cape Town featuring 157 designer rooms will open its doors in 2010 – just in time for the FIFA World Cup.

Sandton is a suburb of South Africa’s largest city Johannesburg and already home to two Radisson Blu properties – the Radisson Blu Hotel Sandton (opened in early 2009) and the Radisson Blu Hotel Sandton Central (opening in early 2010). The new Park Inn Sandton will be located on a prime site on Katherine Street within “Africa’s Richest Square Mile”, as this part of the city is known.

Besides 270 rooms the property will feature an outlet of Park Inn’s signature restaurant RBG Bar & Grill (“Red Bar & Grill”). Meeting facilities include seven conference rooms. For leisure, guests will be able to enjoy an outdoor swimming pool (with terrace and bar) and a fitness facility.

Business travellers find in Sandton numerous multinational corporations, banks, financial institutions and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. The Sandton Convention Centre is one of the region’s largest and hosted the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development. To accommodate the ever increasing demand for commercial and office space, Sandton is undergoing further redevelopment, and the area seems poised to become a Manhattan-style downtown with office towers and residences soaring above the current skyline. Sandton is also home to Africa’s largest shopping district with Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square bustling with upmarket boutiques and retailers.

Hotel Missoni Cape Town has a prime location in the heart of this thriving city. Surrounded by upmarket office towers, trendy restaurants and clubs and popular tourism sites the hotel offers convenience to both business and leisure travellers.

Besides 157 rooms, the hotel will feature a signature Missoni Cucina restaurant, a bar, a rooftop terrace with a cantilevered swimming pool and views of Table Mountain, a full spa and small meeting and private dining facilities.

Andrew McLachlan, Rezidor’s Vice President Business Development Africa & Indian Ocean Islands, said, “Cape Town has in recent years become one of the most popular locations for fashion photography, commercial and film productions. Furthermore, the entertainment industry, together with the tourism industry has become the fastest growing and most successful industry in the Western Cape so we believe the city and market is ready for a true international lifestyle brand like Hotel Missoni.”

Cape Town is a cosmopolitan city of three million people with a superb natural setting, with the Atlantic Ocean and its deep water harbour and bay on one side and the impressive iconic Table Mountain on the other side.

The Hotel Missoni Cape Town is Rezidor’s 4th hotel in Cape Town (following the Radisson Blu Hotel Waterfront, Park Inn Greenmarket Square and Radisson Blu Hotel Blaauwberg which is also due to open in 2010) which today is one of the global jet set capitals and remains a predominantly tourist destination but is growing as a corporate and business destination as businesses diversify and the demand for services grows in the region.

Rezidor has a worldwide licence agreement with the iconic Italian fashion house Missoni and this week opened the first Hotel Missoni in Edinburgh – two further properties are under development in Kuwait and Oman.
