New Head Sommelier at the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island

Travel News Asia Latest Travel News Friday, 4 April 2008

The Conrad Maldives Rangali Island has appointed Michael Arcena as its new Head Sommelier, with responsibility for the resort’s extensive wine collection across seven restaurants and three bars.

Michael has over nine years of wine management experience, largely gained during his time with Celebrity Cruises, where he was responsible for a team of 18 sommeliers.

As well as coordinating a wealth of Wine Seminars and Programs for guests, Michael also worked closely with Consultant Michelin Starred Chef Michel Roux to gain the accolade of ‘Number One Speciality Restaurant of the High Seas’ for the SS Olympic.

“With 10,000 bottles of wine, an under-ground Wine Cellar and even a resident cheese sommelier, we pride ourselves on being the premier gourmet resort in the Indian Ocean,” said Carsten Schieck, the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island General Manager and Island Chief.

“From hosting five-course wine tasting and dégustation dinners in the newly refurbished underground Wine Cellar to co-ordinating our ‘House’ champagne menu in Ithaa, the world’s first all-glass under-sea restaurant, our Head Sommelier plays an integral part of our gourmet experience and we are confident that Michael’s passion and experience will prove invaluable,” Schieck added.

Michael will also continue to coordinate the resort’s busy gourmet calendar, which incorporates visits from a selection of the world's leading wine-makers and chefs.
