Over 5000 athletes expected at the 2008 Laguna Phuket International Marathon

The 2008 Laguna Phuket International Marathon, which will take place 15 June, already has 3350 athletes registered to take part. Local runners from Phuket and nearby provinces are expected to register at the expo taking place during the two days prior to the event, bringing the expected number of athletes at this years event to over 5000.

The 3350 registered athletes can be divided into 700 athletes in the 42k Marathon, 900 in the 21k Half-Marathon, 650 in the 10.5k Run, 600 in the 5k Walk and 500 in the 2k Kids Run.

Athletes from Thailand are the largest group at this years event, with 1263 athletes already registered and more expected to register during the two-day expo prior to race day, bringing this number to over 2000. There are also 248 Singaporeans, 203 Japanese, 147 Malaysians, 100 from Hong Kong and 152 from the UK.

The 5k Walk, which was first introduced at last years event, has also received increasing interest from local clubs and organizations. Participants in the 5k Walk will be wearing their club or company colours, not only to demonstrate support for their club/organization and their community spirit, but to also raise funds for charity. Team Laguna leads the pack with 180 registered participants. Other organisations already registered include 102 participants from The Sarojin, 39 from The Chedi, 29 from Asia Web Direct, 25 from Le Meridien Phuket Resort and 17 from Trisara.
