The family-owned Speyside Balvenie distillery has launched The Balvenie 1964 Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Bottled exclusively for duty free retailer Sky Connection and now available at Hong Kong International Airport, each bottle is  priced at HK$108,000 (£7,100 GBP / US$14,200). This unique cask, Number 10378 from 1964, has matured to perfection at The Balvenie Distillery, and is extremely rare, offering connoisseurs a whisky of a lifetime.

The 1964 cask, personally selected by The Balvenie Malt Master, rested in a single oak cask for over 40 years at The Balvenie Distillery in Speyside, Scotland. With only 151 bottles forthcoming, The Balvenie 1964 is a rarity.

An expert in whisky maturation, The Balvenie Malt Master, David Stewart has no doubt that this bottling is a true whisky event, “It is only a few special casks of The Balvenie single malt that continue to improve beyond 40 years. Each cask has a unique influence on the spirit it holds and the fine balance of flavours in The Balvenie 1964 can never be repeated.”

Over 40 years of maturation has imparted The Balvenie 1964 with an amazing depth of flavour, characterised by sweet infusions of dried tobacco leaf and rich fruit cake, complex layers of dried fruits, ground coffee, walnut, and elegant oakiness. Bottled at cask strength of 41.3% ABV and presented in a specially crafted cherry wood box, each bottle is individually hand numbered.

Travel Retail Marketing Manager Nick Woodward said, “In Asia, there are elite consumers looking to discover highly limited and truly authentic products, and The Balvenie 1964 is one of our most precious bottlings. We chose Hong Kong airport for this exclusive launch as passengers there are well known for their desire for prestigious, handcrafted luxury.”

The Balvenie is a unique range of single malts created by David Stewart, The Balvenie Malt Master. Each has a very individual taste, but each is rich, luxuriously smooth and underpinned by the distinctively honeyed character of The Balvenie.

Produced in Speyside in the Scottish Highlands, the exceptional quality of The Balvenie Single Malt is due to the fact that The Balvenie Distillery retains and nurtures a high level of craftsmanship that many other malt whisky producers no longer employ. The distillery still grows its own barley, still malts in its own traditional floor maltings, still employs coopers to tend all the casks and a coppersmith to maintain the stills.

The Balvenie is produced by William Grant & Sons Ltd. This award winning, independent family-owned distiller was founded by William Grant in 1893 and today is run by his direct descendants.

Today the Balvenie Distillery produces a multi award-winning range of The Balvenie Single Malts, which includes The Balvenie DoubleWood 12 Year Old, The Balvenie Single Barrel 15 Year Old, The Balvenie PortWood 21 Year Old and The Balvenie Thirty Year Old.
