Starwood Staff celebrate UNICEFs 60th anniversary by Raising Funds for Children

Travel News Asia Wednesday, 7 March 2007

Thousands of children in the Asia Pacific region are set to benefit from Starwood Hotels & Resorts Asia Pacifics latest fundraising event UNICEF Check Out for Children Challenge, where vital funds were raised for UNICEF immunization projects in the Asia Pacific region. A total of 45 Starwood hotels in Asia Pacific participated in the UNICEF Challenge, raising a total of over US$75, 000 for UNICEFs immunization efforts.

The UNICEF Challenge is a Starwood staff fundraising initiative, in conjunction with Starwoods partnership with UNICEF through UNICEF Check Out for Children. With the UNICEF Challenge, hotel staff came up with an innovative fundraising idea based on a particular theme. The theme of the Challenge in 2006 was A celebration of the last 60 years, in keeping with UNICEF's 60th Anniversary year.

Hotels themed their fundraising around the last 60 years and came up with creative ways around this theme to raise funds. These include a 6 kilometer march and cycling race at Ming City Wall in Xian, charity auctions, football tournaments, 60 day car cleaning event, etc. Two hotels were also selected as winners in the Challenge for their creativity and promotion of the partnership and activities, and will be embarking on a meaningful UNICEF field trip to learn about how Starwood and UNICEFs partnership has benefited children worldwide.

"It is thanks to the dedication and motivation of Starwood employees that we have been able to raise such an impressive sum for UNICEF to date," said Miguel Ko, President Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide Inc., Asia Pacific. "We are delighted that we are helping make a difference to the lives of children worldwide with this creative UNICEF Challenge initiative.
