Planet Payment achieves Certification with JCB International

Travel News Asia Friday, 31 August 2007

Planet Payment, an international multi-currency payment and data processor, has expanded its processing solution by achieving certification with JCB International. The certification allows Planet Payment to process transactions completed by JCB cardholders received from supported point-of-sale applications, including stand-alone credit card terminals and integrated payment solutions such as hotel property management systems.

JCB International is a leading international credit card brand and one of the largest issuers and acquirers in Japan. Historically, JCB focused primarily upon the Japanese tourist segment. Over the course of the past few years, it has formulated a more comprehensive global growth strategy, increasing JCB issuance through 350 financial institutions around the world. According to JCB, it has 59.05 million cardholders worldwide, is accepted at 14.05 million merchant outlets across 190 countries, with annual sales volume of US$62.7 billion. JCB is currently experiencing particularly strong growth in Asia.

Planet Payment provides acquiring banks, processors and their merchants with a comprehensive suite of international processing solutions and services, which are designed to improve efficiency and profitability. With the certification in place, Planet Payment has added JCB to card types supported within its product set, allowing the company to offer JCB processing to JCB partner banks or financial institution located anywhere in the world, with the exception only of North America. Planet Payment also intends to certify to J/Smart, JCB’s Smart Card Transaction Specification, which will allow for the processing of JCB chip-and-pin smart cards.

Commenting on the certification with JCB, Philip Beck, Chief Executive Officer of Planet Payment, said, “The certification of Planet Payment with JCB is a significant addition to our international suite of processing solutions. Given JCB’s strong footprint in Asia, the ability to process JCB transactions allows Planet Payment to deliver a more comprehensive and robust product set to both our existing and future customers.”
