Free Horse Racing for Visitors to Hong Kong

Search ASIA Travel Tips .com Monday, 30 April 2007

Overseas visitors to Hong Kong can enjoy free admission to Hong Kong’s world famous racecourses from May 1st until the end of the current horse-racing season on July 2nd 2007.

Visitors are admitted free-of-charge at the public stands at both Hong Kong tracks – Wednesday night neon racing at Happy Valley in the heart of the city, and weekend day racing at the picturesque Sha Tin Racecourse. Tourists only need to show their travel documents at the time of admission to enjoy this offer.

Tourists will also receive a complimentary racecourse tour (at Sha Tin Racecourse only), a ‘fortune bag’ with various discount offers, and a horse design pen - an ever-popular souvenir item from the racecourse gift shop.

The program by the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC), ranked among one of the largest racing jurisdictions in the world, aims to entice more overseas visitors to experience one of Hong Kong’s most popular tourist attractions. The tourist welcome program will end with the last race meeting of the season on July 2nd.

Apart from the unique racing experience, the two racecourses offer a broad range of dining options – from Chinese and international restaurants to bars, buffets and fast-food kiosks.

At Sha Tin, these include two Chinese restaurants, the Pak Sing Restaurant and Jun Hui Ting. At Happy Valley, visitors are welcome at the Chinese-style Moon Koon Restaurant and Stable Bend Terrace. They can also watch the racing from the exciting atmosphere of Adrenaline, a horseracing sports bar with a close up view of the racetrack.

Tourists can also visit the Hong Kong Racing Museum at Happy Valley, which provides a fascinating historical insight into how the sport has evolved since its mid-19th century beginnings. The museum is open without charge to all ages, Tuesday to Sunday.

Overseas visitors looking for a more elegant experience can opt to purchase a "Tourist Badge" to enter the members' enclosure. Besides accessing the Members' Betting Halls and trackside areas, visitors can choose from a range of dining options including Sprinter, Bon Appetit, Sushi Bar and the Weigh-In Bar. Tourist Badges can be purchased on site at the Members' Main Entrance or at designated Off-Course Betting branches up to 10 days before each race meeting.

Those wishing to experience the high life of viewing the racing from within the prestigious Members Boxes should also consult their hotel concierges who may sometimes be able to arrange special access. Visitors must be 18 and above to enter the racecourse in Hong Kong.
