Six Senses Spa at Porto Elounda Opens on the Greek Island of Crete

Travel News Asia Wednesday, 21 February 2007

A luxurious Six Senses Spa has opened at Porto Elounda, Crete, establishing itself as one of the most breathtaking spas in the whole of Greece. Located on a peninsular overlooking a breathtaking expanse of the Aegean Sea, the Six Senses Spa offers a comprehensive selection of holistic and well-being treatments to balance the senses. Its traditional architectural style is highlighted with cutting edge features, and is the showcase for a fabulous collection of contemporary art.

A sensory environment, which blends water, stone, glass, wood and striking murals, contributes to an unforgettable spa experience. No detail has been overlooked - from the enchanting reception area to the adjoining Six Senses Spa shop, where guests walk around a marble pond admiring the murals of Greek painter Paniaras. The central staircase wraps around a magnificent helical glass sculpture by the acclaimed Greek sculptor Kostas Varotsos. In addition to the inspired collection of paintings and sculptures the spa looks out to the distant mountain ranges across the expanses of azure Mediterranean waters.

Ranged over two levels, the twenty three treatment areas include a Junior Suite with a dry float room, Thalassotherapy Suites with a seawater air and jet tub, Oriental treatment rooms, couples and group treatment rooms with outdoor bubble-tubs and a private area for serial or rasul therapies, a hair salon and Cleopatra bath. There is also a Caldarium – a traditional Roman steam room, traditional Finnish sauna, saunarium, ice-cold plunge pool, and separate male and female changing areas.

The spa’s wide-ranging menu of regional and Six Senses signature treatments focuses on health, beauty, pampering, stress reduction and revitalization, using natural and environmentally friendly products. Treatments are administered by a team of skilled international therapists and specialist practitioners who combine Eastern and Western techniques.

Receiving its name from traditional Roman baths, the Tepidarium is the spa’s focal point providing a bravura space that excites all the senses. Water is the principal theme of this area; cascading, bubbling in the hydrotherapy swimming pool, reflecting in the overhead glass pond, and dominating the view from the enormous glass facade.

One of the unique features of the Six Senses Spa at Porto Elounda is the Spring Suite - a private spa within a spa - offering treatments to be enjoyed by a group of friends. The suite offers a steam room, sauna, small hydropool, outdoor bubble-tub, two treatment rooms with indoor and outdoor relaxation areas, and with healthy balanced cuisine available – all in total privacy.

The Ottoman hammam area introduces the age-old ritual experience of cleansing and rejuvenation. The hammam has its own private relaxation area which takes advantage of natural lighting through glass blocks set into the ceiling and large windows looking out to the Mediterranean. The hydropool, with heated seawater, has both indoor and an outdoor areas. Guests recline on bubble-beds while enjoying the views and the benefits of the warm Aegean sun.

The Six Senses Spa is ideally situated to serve the three luxury hotels of Elounda S.A. Hotels & Resorts. From the breathtaking hilltop view towards the Gulf of Elounda lays Porto Elounda Deluxe Resort. Designed with respect for the architectural tradition of the location, this unique and by far the largest complex, is an oasis of recreation and luxury. Considered one of the most exclusive hotels in Greece, the Elounda Peninsula All Suite Hotel is the ideal escape, where guests can luxuriate in seafront accommodation with private jetty, heated indoor and outdoor swimming pool, sauna, steam room and garden. Finally, Elounda Mare Hotel is built on gently sloping land, and reflects the simple discreet luxury that typifies the aesthetic traditions of the island.
