Traditional Maldives Fishing Excursions at Naladhu Resort

Travel News Asia Wednesday, 18 July 2007

The luxury Naladhu Resort in the Maldives has launched a special “Line & Pole” fishing excursion for guests.

With its turquoise waters simply teeming with game fish, the Maldives remains one of those rare locales where fisherman continue to use the traditional line and pole method to catch the many tuna, mackerel, skipjack, bonito and frigate that frequent their seas. In favorable seasons, local fishermen are known to return with nets brimming with hundreds of fish.

In true native style, Naladhu guests can experience an authentic fishing jaunt in the customary local fishing boats, called dhonis. Equipped only with a short pole, line and hook, participants sail out early morning as the sun spills its yolky light over the Indian ocean.

The unique line and pole fishing excursion embarks at the Naladhu jetty and heads to the buoy where local fishermen congregate on their colorful dhonis. Then, the action begins, with the actual fishing complemented by animated tales from the seafaring men about their past catches, as well as instructions for first-timers about how to procure live bait and lure the different fish species. The crew explains and demonstrates the traditional method of line and pole fishing and their antics ensure a captivating and entertaining time for all who participate. Following the activities, guests are served with tropical refreshments and fruits as they sail back toward Naladhu.

For centuries, the island inhabitants have used the line and pole method on their triangular-sailed dhonis to make the daily catch and provide for their families.

For Nalaldhu guests, the Line and Pole fishing excursion promises an authentic glimpse into the life and indeed traditions of the Maldives. Bookings are required 24 hrs in advance and the price per person is US$210 plus service charge.
