Starwood opens The Westin Denarau Island Resort & Spa on the island of Fiji

Travel News Asia Thursday, 6 April 2006

Starwood Hotels & Resorts has opened The Westin Denarau Island Resort & Spa on the island of Fiji.

Formerly the Sheraton Royal Denarau Resort, which opened in 1974, the resort has undergone a $15 million renovation to its 271 guestrooms, restaurants, a two-tiered beachfront pool and state-of-the-art spa. Heavenly Spa by Westin at The Westin Denarau is one of the largest spas in Fiji and is a member of the Starwood Spa Collection.

While transforming and enhancing the resort to a Westin, the team of architects and designers carefully maintained the original style and authenticity the resort is famous for. The Westin Denarau Island Resort & Spa is part of a portfolio of hotels that is expected to be sold to Host Marriott Corporation later this month and will continue to be managed by Starwood under its Westin brand.

"We are delighted to bring new life and the Westin name to this extraordinary resort which has enjoyed such a wonderful reputation over its impressive 35 year history,” said Sue Brush, senior vice president, Westin Hotels & Resorts. “This resort will provide the perfect venue for Westin’s signature sense of personal renewal and rejuvenation for many, many years to come.”

The Westin Denarau Island Resort & Spa is designed to reflect Fiji’s rich Melanesian culture and local tropical island style with priceless local ancestral carvings, artifacts and lush tropical gardens filled with exotic flowers and native birds. The resort is spread over 30 acres of prime beachfront land on Denarau Island and connected to the mainland of Fiji by a causeway. It is only 20 minutes from Nadi International Airport and three minutes from Port Denarau Marina and situated next to the Sheraton Fiji Resort and the Sheraton Denarau Villas. Guests have full access to all the facilities at the adjacent Sheraton resorts including five restaurants, three bars and lounges and three swimming pools. The world-renowned Denarau Golf & Racquet Club is a leisurely stroll away offering an 18-hole championship golf course and 10 tennis courts.

The resort’s spacious guestrooms and suites are furnished with rich, warm Fijian Golden Vesi timbers and palm wood blend with plush textiles and local arts to enhance the island mood of understated luxury. Each guest room features Westin’s Heavenly Bed and Heavenly Bath, a 32” flat screen LCD TV, high-speed Internet connection in all rooms and Bose DVD player and surround-sound home theatre sound systems.

Nestled amidst a lush meditation garden with tropical lily lagoons surrounding the garden, the resort’s newly renovated Heavenly Spa by Westin features eight Fijian-style treatment bures (Fijian thatched roof huts) and two suites, a Vichy shower treatment room, a hydrotherapy room, a wet-edge lap pool, Jacuzzi and a WestinWORKOUT Powered by Reebok fitness center with state of the art fitness equipment. A comprehensive range of body, facial and wrap treatments using Europe’s Thalgo as well as Fijian traditional products are offered.

The renovation of The Westin Denarau Island Resort & Spa features a full service business center and has added two meeting rooms to its existing meeting facilities. The Westin’s existing ballroom features native design inspiring every event with the local feel. Together with the nearby Sheraton Fiji Resort, it provides meeting and incentive facilities with seating capacity for up to 1,100.
