Pearl Village Resort Phuket to recreate itself as the Indigo Pearl

Travel News Asia 6 March 2006

The Pearl Village Resort, which has been a popular resort in Phuket since 1986, is investing 800 million Baht to recreate itself as the Indigo Pearl.

“Over the past two decades, Pearl Village Resort established itself as a highly-regarded and successful destination for guests from all over the world,” said Mr Wichit Na-Ranong, Managing Director. “We felt it was time to look into the future and determine how we could really differentiate our offering to attract a polished and urbane clientele. After spending a lot of time studying market trends in Thailand and the region and learning what discerning travelers are looking for in a distinctive vacation experience, we developed the Indigo Pearl concept.”

He added that, as well as creating a very engaging resort experience, the Na-Ranong family wanted to make a significant contribution to restoring Phuket’s position as Asia’s premiere tourist destination. “Phuket is my home and has given me the opportunity to enjoy solid business success. We are confident in Phuket’s future and believe that this investment will help bring in a new demographic of visitors seeking unique vacation experiences that reflect their sense of style and creativity.”

The Indigo Pearl is being created under the direction of renowned architect and interior designer Bill Bensley. Well known for his holistic approach of integrating structures with nature while embracing local art forms, Bensley is working closely with Ms. Prakaikaew Na-Ranong Theerathada, the resort’s Deputy Managing Director, to implement the Indigo Pearl concept.

“We wanted the overall feeling to reflect Phuket’s heritage as a former tin mining center while offering a distinctive atmosphere that will intrigue urbane travelers. They will delight in the smallest details, from the reclaimed building materials through to locally-crafted furnishings, as well as grounds that will be a modernist transformation of a mature plantation, accented by contemporary and industrial art,” said Ms. Prakaikaew.

The Indigo Pearl will feature 290 rooms and suites that meet a variety of tastes. Most of the rooms offer space ranging from 56 to 120 sqm. Guests at the Indigo Pearl will be able to select from eight bars and restaurants that offer a wide range of tasty yet healthy modern Asian and international cuisines. Recreational facilities will include three swimming pools, a cooking school, tennis courts, spa services, a Kids’ club, a fitness and meditation pavilion, a diving school and a classically-designed games room with a snooker hall. The Indigo Pearl also has a secluded and sheltered Andaman Sea beachfront that includes a private beach club. Guests will have access to the technologies they expect when traveling, from high-speed Internet over Wi-Fi to digital music systems.

“The Indigo Pearl will deliver a unique end-to-end experience to guests, from being picked up at the airport in an impressive style to a retrained and highly motivated staff who satisfy their needs in a subtle yet efficient manner,” added Ms. Prakaikaew. “Our guests will be able to enjoy an unmatched holiday experience at rates comparable to Phuket’s more traditional resorts.”

The transformation begins March 7 and the Indigo Pearl is scheduled to reopen in mid-October 2006.
