Kempinski to manage Hotel in Tbilisi, capital of Georgia

Travel News Asia Wednesday, 6 December 2006

Kempinski Hotels recently signed an agreement with Capital Vostok to manage a five star luxury hotel in Tbilisi’s city centre, on the main boulevard and close to the opera house. The hotel will open in 2009.

The hotel will have 200 rooms and suites and up to 50 serviced apartments. The hotel is being designed by Krier • Kohl Architects to meet the needs of business travellers. Guests at the hotel will benefit from 24 hour room service, housekeeping and Concierge services. There will also be a bar and two restaurants. Meeting and conference facilities are planned, with two multi-function rooms for 300 people each. A spa and fitness centre covering 1000 m2 will offer guests an indoor pool and squash courts. A luxury shopping mall will also be part of the complex, with designer boutiques and cafés.

Georgia is on the Black Sea and shares borders with Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Turkey and is of economic importance as a transit state for pipelines and trade. The country’s major industries are agriculture and mining of manganese and copper. Tbilisi is a major economic centre, yet the atmosphere and culture of the city is distinctly cosmopolitan, perhaps inspired by its heritage as an important staging point on the Silk Road.
