Pocket Sized Taxi Guides aim to beat Travellers Linguistic Frustrations

Travel News Asia Wednesday, 27 September 2006

A trio of pocket sized taxi guides is a new option for travellers who face linguistic frustrations getting around the bustling cities of Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong/Macau, by offering complete translations for all useful city addresses in both English and Chinese.

Produced by Tamco Publishing, The Taxi Guide is sold either individually for HK$60 (around US$ 7.50), or as a boxed set featuring all three cities, which costs HK$150 (around US$20).

Each hard-backed edition includes useful items such as arrow stickers to indicate directions, an inside pocket for hotel room key or name cards, helpful phrases, and all important telephone numbers for emergencies, taxis and other useful organisations. There are also quick shopping tips, tunnel /bridge fee information, simple maps and guides, and a handy pronunciation guide.

Author and Publisher, Kimberly Fayet Whiley said her inspiration to develop The Taxi Guide came from her own experience of living in Asia for more than 15 years and facing similar problems in every country where she has taken a taxi. “I realized how great if would be if we all had a “tool” that would allow us to get off the plane and into a taxi in a place where the people do not speak English, and not have to worry about how to get to our destination. After a flight, that added hassle is just too much. My book is aimed at solving this problem.”

New editions coming soon include The Taxi Guide to Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh/Hanoi), Bangkok and Pearl River Delta (Shenzhen / Guangzhou).
