Finnairs Leisure Flights to Decrease Fuel Consumption with Winglets Installation

Travel News Asia Wednesday, 26 July 2006

Finnairs Leisure Flights fleet are to become more environmentally friendly when winglets are fitted to the tips of the seven Boeing 757-200 aircrafts wings. The winglets improve the aerodynamics of the aircraft and thus decrease fuel consumption as well as carbon dioxide and nitrous oxides emissions. The first installations will be done at Finnair Technical Services in the autumn.

Thanks to savings from fuel costs the winglet payback time for Finnair is expected to be approximately two years. Finnair Leisure Flights has one of the highest utilization rates in the world for its Boeing 757 fleet.

The installation of the winglets improves the aerodynamics of the aircraft. The air drag of the aircraft decreases and leads to smaller fuel consumption. We have estimated that after the changes, the aircraft will use 4-5% less fuel, said Boeing 757 Engineer Jari Valkama from Finnair Technical Services.

The winglets will increase the wingspan of the aircraft by some three meters and the distance of the wing tips from the ground by approximately 2.5 metres. The range capability of the aircraft will improve by 200 nautical miles or 370 km. The winglets are delivered by Aviation Partners Boeing Technology.

Finnair Leisure Flights has some 60 destinations around the world. In the summer season flights are operated mainly to the Mediterranean and in the winters to long-haul destinations.
