United Republic of Tanzania appoints New Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism

Travel News Asia 23 January 2006

The United Republic of Tanzania has appointed Hon. Anthony Diallo, MP, as the new Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism.

Hon. Anthony Diallo, MP, a businessman and media executive from Lake Victoria’s city of Mwanza, assumed the role from his predecessor, Hon. Zakia Hamdani Meghji. Hon. Diallo is the former Tanzanian Deputy Minister for Water and Livestock Development.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism will also have for the first time a Deputy Minister, Hon. Zabein Mhita. The new Permanent Secretary will be Mr. Saleh Pamba, who has held the position of Director of Tourism under the former Minister.

One of the fastest growing tourist destinations in Africa, Tanzania’s tourism is booming. This increase is reflected both in tourist numbers, as well as in recent investments by major international luxury hotel chains including Kempinski and Movenpick. Tanzania expects the total number of tourist arrivals to increase 15%, from 600,000 in 2005 to an estimated 700,000 in 2006. This growth is attributed to Tanzania’s world famous attractions including Mt. Kilimanjaro, Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti National Park, and Zanzibar, to name just a few.
