Travel News Asia Tuesday, 19 September 2006

Madame Tussauds Hong Kong recently unveiled Ms. Connie Chan Po Chu’s wax figure against a stunning, traditional Chinese backdrop. Ms. Chan’s wax figure marks the first in Madame Tussauds history to appear in full Chinese regalia, a costume inspired by “Only You”, Ms. Chan’s vibrant musical set in the Yuan Dynasty, in which she currently stars.

Kelly Mak, Head of Marketing & Customer Services at Madame Tussauds Hong Kong said, “Madame Tussauds Hong Kong strives to acknowledge those who have made significant contributions to the world of stage and screen.”

“Ms. Chan has been a silver screen legend since she was in her teens and now she is again making headlines with her outstanding performance in “Only You”. We’re excited to present our guests with the opportunity to meet Connie while experiencing what life was like during the Yuan Dynasty.”

During the unveiling event held at Madame Tussauds Hong Kong, Ms. Chan and her loyal fans applauded as her wax double was revealed from behind a traditional Chinese red screen, the colour of joy and prosperity according to ancient customs. A specially-built set located in World Premiere and inspired by richly textured ancient Chinese décor, house the regal figure, which stands in front of an oversized portrait of Li-Juen, Ms. Chan’s character in “Only You”.

The wax figure is resplendent in full Yuan Dynasty regalia, the same costume worn by Chan when promoting “Only You”, which Chan has lovingly donated.

“It is a great honour to be featured at Madame Tussauds Hong Kong. I am ecstatic to learn that my wax figure is the first ancient Chinese-inspired wax figure in history, and I hope it will inspire more tourists and residents alike to take an interest in ancient Chinese arts,” the elegant actress said.

A captivating star since early childhood, Ms. Chan was known for her impeccable Chinese opera performances before entering the movie industry in 1956. Throughout the 1960’s she made over 200 movies and was known as the ‘fan’s princess,’ a diva equally at home on stage or screen.

In 1999, Ms. Chan came out of retirement to star in ‘A Sentimental Journey’. In 2006, Ms. Chan, together with the renowned team that created ‘A Sentimental Journey’, reunited in August for ‘Only You’, a vibrant musical set in the Yuan Dynasty.

Madame Tussauds Hong Kong is open from 10am to 10pm daily.
