Starwood Hotels & Resorts associates help with rebuilding of school in Krabi

Travel News Asia 19 January 2006

As part of the initiatives under the Starwood Cares for Community programme, Starwood Asia Pacific divisional associates recently conducted a major rebuilding project of an underprivileged primary school in Krabi, through various fund raising activities as well as through a trip to the school to start the refurbishment. Besides rebuilding the school, Starwood Hotels & Resorts also provided school materials, uniforms and meals for the children in the long-term.

“Starwood is proud to be able to make a difference not only for the people directly involved, but for our staff and the community as a whole,” said Oliver Bonke, Vice President, Sales & Marketing for Starwood Asia Pacific. “This is very much in line with what our Starwood Asia Pacific organizational culture, Starwood Cares, is all about. We are optimistic that with the new look for the school, we will be able to create a much more conducive learning environment for these children. They should all enjoy the same right and opportunity to education as with all children around the world.”

Baan Sai Thai school is a primary school located in Krabi, and has close to 45 students and 3 teachers. Since its opening 60 years ago, the school structure’s condition has deteriorated and has not been given any upgrade or refurbishment. The poor conditions of the school, coupled with the lack of jobs of parents living in the neighbourhood of the school directly and indirectly due to the Tsunami in 2004, have contributed towards low morale and attendance of students at the school.
