Boeing to Discontinue Connexion by Boeing Service

Boeing has confirmed that following a detailed business and market analysis of its Connexion by Boeing service that it is to exit the high-speed broadband communications connectivity markets. Boeing is now working with its customers to phase out the Connexion by Boeing service, but it is not currently clear what exactly will happen to those planes which have the system already installed.

The move comes only months after Boeing tried to enhance and simplify the service in a move to make it a more attractive option for travellers.

"Over the last six years, we have invested substantial time, resources and technology in Connexion by Boeing," said Boeing Chairman, President and CEO Jim McNerney. "Regrettably, the market for this service has not materialized as had been expected. We believe this decision best balances the long-term interests of all parties with a stake in Connexion by Boeing."

Boeing said that it expects the majority of Connexion employees to find other jobs within the company.
