Evason Phuket Resort earns 4 Green Leaves

Travel News Asia Friday, 12 May 2006

The Evason Phuket Resort was recently awarded the accreditation of 4 Green Leaves, thus officially becoming a benchmarked resort with GREEN GLOBE 21, the benchmarking certification and improvement system for sustainable travel and tourism. It is based on Agenda 21 and principles for Sustainable Development endorsed by 182 Heads of State at the United Nations Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit. It provides companies, communities and consumers with a path to sustainable travel and tourism.

The Green Leaf Programme is organized by the Board of Environmental Promotion of Tourism Activities, or BEPTA, which was established in 1994. BEPTA has completed environmental practice checklists for hotels for environmental assessment and has appointed an audit team to conduct these audits. The assessments are graded with the standard score to measure a hotels operation efficiency in environmental management. The results of the assessment are then compared with the reference standard score reported by the property.

Audited properties promote and practice environmental awareness in the tourism and travel industry. The highest level of resource efficiency of environmental protection is awarded a Green Leaf Certificate, ranging form 1 to 5 leaves.

GREEN GLOBE 21 certification is awarded annually, with certified resorts undergoing benchmarking each year. This means that an operation can work towards higher accreditation and see its progress in achieving targets over time, thus committing to a process of continual improvement. At the same time it enforces the credibility of the GREEN GLOBE 21 accreditation.
