Smiths Detection wins Suvarnabhumi Contract

Travel News Asia Tuesday, 10 October 2006

Smiths-EMC, a consortium led by Smiths Detection has won a contract to supply a comprehensive integrated security system for Thai Airways at Bangkok’s new Suvarnabhumi Airport. Under the contract, valued at over US$10 million, Smiths Detection will supply, install, and integrate X-ray screening equipment, the network infrastructure, intelligent CCTV systems, access control and intrusion detection systems.

In the first international contract of its type for Smiths Detection, its LiveWave business unit will integrate the security hardware through its FirstView systems management software to create a highly secure network and master control facility that connects all physical security equipment on the site.

Stephen Phipson, Group Managing Director of Smiths Detection, commented, “This is a landmark contract for Smiths Detection. The acquisition of LiveWave last November was a significant move for Smiths Detection, bringing networking and integration skills that we added to our existing screening technologies, to create major contract opportunities. For this important new airport in Bangkok, our ability to offer an integrated network through LiveWave, plus advanced security systems, was the critical factor in our success.”

Smiths Detection’s partner in the project consortium was EMC Group Public Company Limited, one of the leading electrical and mechanical engineering contractors in Thailand.

Mal Maginnis, President of Smiths Detection Asia Pacific, said, “This exciting new project shows how physical security equipment, such as our HI-SCAN x-ray systems, which are to be used principally for cargo screening, can be linked together with CCTV, access control and intruder alarm systems, to provide a high quality and cost-effective solution for our customers.”

Flg. Off. Apinan Sumanaseni, President, Thai Airways International, said, “As the national carrier, safety has always been our top priority. This includes safety in the air and on the ground, safety for our passengers, our crews, our staff, the public and, of course our aircraft and all other facilities. Over the past 46 years many things have changed, both in the workplace and in the environment, and our safety and security practices have constantly evolved and changed to meet the changing conditions. Today, effective and efficient building security systems are essential, and that is why we chose to install Smiths Detection security systems in all THAI buildings at Suvarnabhumi Airport, recognizing the company’s high standard and advanced technology systems.”

THAI is the first company in Thailand to apply the integrated security systems provided by Smiths Detection.
