Crop scientists to descend on Melbourne, Australia

Melbourne has secured another international scientific congress for the new Melbourne Convention Centre. The International Congress for the Chemistry of Crop Protection will bring 1,500 delegates to Melbourne in 2010 to present achievements of science and technology and exchange opinions about pesticide chemistry and bioscience.

Melbourne won the event following strong competition from Washington DC.

According to Dr Greg Simpson, Deputy Chief, CSIRO, Molecular Health and Technologies the congress committee was extremely impressed with Melbourne’s new Convention Centre development. 

“The committee believes the new Melbourne Convention Centre will be an excellent venue for the congress. The committee was also pleased with Melbourne as a business events destination,” said Dr Simpson.

“This will be the first time the congress has been held in Australia. The committee saw Melbourne as a desirable destination for international visitors, with a great reputation in research and development, an abundance of attractions, restaurants and convention infrastructure.

“The bid, compiled with the assistance of the Melbourne Convention + Visitors Bureau (MCVB), was viewed as thorough and professional,” he said.

Significant support from government, industry and scientific organisations also helped secure the win for Melbourne.

“Since the Victorian government’s announcement of plans to build the new convention centre by 2009, Melbourne has secured a number of high profile international conventions,” said Garry Kingshott, CEO, MCVB.

“This is a perfect example of the type of business event that we can win for Melbourne now that the new convention centre is to be built.

“Since the announcement six international conventions have chosen Melbourne as a business events destination. Combined these conventions will inject over A$85 million into Melbourne and Victorian businesses,” he said.
