Finnair demand and load factors up in August 2005

Finnair scheduled traffic increased by 7% compared to August 2004. Passenger load factor was at record levels in 71.4%, up 2.7 percentage points. Number of passengers carried was 599,700, up 7.9%.

Finnair traffic, measured in passenger kilometers, increased by 7.3% in August, while the capacity was up by 4.8%, resulting in a passenger load factor of 74.5% or 1.7 points higher than last year. All Finnair Group airlines altogether transported 723,000 passengers, which is 7.5% more than a year ago.

Finnair's Tallinn-based subsidiary Aero AS, carried 59,400 passengers (+539.0%) on routes between Helsinki and the Baltic capitals and within Southern Finland. During August, Stockholm-based flynordic continued to gain market share and carried 104,300 passengers (+113.9%), which is a new monthly record.  Aero and flynordic figures are respectively included in Finnair Group total figures.

Departure punctuality of scheduled flights was 90.6% (based on a fifteen minute standard), 2.3 points higher than in August 2004. Including leisure flights departure punctuality was 89.3% (+2 p.p). Arrival punctuality of scheduled flights was 91.8% and that of all operations was 90.4%. 

Scheduled traffic

In scheduled traffic (international + domestic) revenue passenger kilometres increased by 7%. The change in capacity was +3%. Passenger load factor was 71.4%, 2.7 percentage points higher than last year.

In scheduled international traffic, total number of passengers was up by 14.9%. Capacity in ASKs was +4.3%, while RPKs increased by 8.4%.

In European scheduled traffic, ASKs increased by 4.8%, and as RPKs increased by 12.2%, the passenger load factor was 63.6%, up 4.2 points from previous year.

In North Atlantic scheduled traffic, capacity was on last year's level. Change in RPKs was -3.6%, and passenger load factor for August was 86.3%, 3.2 points lower than previous year.

In Asian scheduled traffic, the capacity increase was 4.6% and passenger traffic was up by 8%. Passenger load factor was 82.4%, 2.6 percentage points up.

Domestic scheduled traffic decreased by 10.6% on a capacity decrease of 9.1%. Passenger load factor decreased by 0.9 percentage points to 53.8%.

Leisure traffic

ASKs for leisure traffic increased in August by 12.9%, and RPKs increased by 8.3%, resulting in a passenger load factor of 86.3%, 3.6 points lower than last year.

Cargo

Cargo traffic decreased by 0.5% in terms of cargo tonnes carried. Growth in scheduled traffic was +4.9%. Increase in Asian traffic was +12.8%. Volume in European traffic decreased by 5.2%. In North-Atlantic traffic cargo volume increased by 5.6%. Cargo traffic carried on chartered cargo flights decreased by 41.3%. The cargo load factor was 61.0%. The cargo load factor in the Asian traffic was 74.8% and in the North Atlantic traffic 73.1%.
