Qantas Dismisses Second Baggage Handler

Search ASIA Travel Tips .com 6 June 2005

Qantas has dismissed a second baggage handler as a result of information arising from the current investigation into the alleged cocaine smuggling operation at Sydney International Airport.

This follows the dismissal of a baggage handler and one of the airline's security managers last month.

Chief Executive Officer of Qantas, Mr Geoff Dixon, said the airline had been working closely with the NSW Crime Commission, the NSW Police and the Australian Federal Police throughout the investigation, and continued to do so.

Mr Dixon said Qantas had identified a very small number of people in relation to the investigation, who were under constant surveillance.

"We have a zero tolerance for any illegal activity and will act quickly to ensure people who should not be in our workforce are dealt with appropriately," he said.

"It is very important to note that despite two isolated incidents involving baggage handlers in recent months, the very great majority of Qantas' 38,000 staff are decent, hardworking and honest."
