PATA publishes Comparative listing of Asia Pacific Destination Performance for Second Quarter 2005

Travel News Asia 4 November 2005

The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) has published its comprehensive and comparative listing of Asia Pacific destination performance for second quarter 2005.

The report shows which destinations attracted the most increases in international visitor arrivals, and from which source markets.

The top five origin-destination growth performances for second quarter 2005 compared to second quarter 2004, (where passenger traffic was 25,000 or more) were:

- China (PRC) to Philippines (+208.9%)
- Korea (ROK) to Macau SAR (+121.8%)
- Korea (ROK) to Malaysia (+99%)
- Korea (ROK) to Cambodia (+96.2%)
- Spain to China (PRC) (+73.9%)

The top five destination winners for the quarter, in terms of arrivals from all markets, compared to second quarter 2004, were:

- Vanuatu (+43.3%)
- Cambodia (+38.8%)
- Sri Lanka (+38.6%)
- Papua New Guinea (+34.5%)
- Lao (PDR) (+33.8%)

In total, 14 Asia Pacific destinations enjoyed double-digit arrivals growth for the quarter.

Only four destinations registered double-digit losses: Samoa (-10.4%); Nepal (-18%); New Caledonia (-38.7%); and the Maldives (-40.9%). The Maldives continued to suffer in the aftermath of the December 26, 2004 Tsunami.

The 32 Asia Pacific destinations included in the report collectively gained +7.4% over second quarter 2004. This increase was equivalent to 5.5 million additional international arrivals.

Within Asia Pacific, each sub-region attracted more international visitor arrivals: The Americas (+3.5%); South Asia (+9.5%); Northeast Asia (+10%); Southeast Asia (+6.1%); and the Pacific (+3.1%).

PATA Director-Strategic Intelligence Centre (SIC) Mr John Koldowski said, "Despite occasional setbacks and crises, Asia Pacific travel and tourism continues to grow, driven by strong economies in Asia Pacific and expanding low-cost carrier networks."
