Kata Karon Hotel Business Association working hard for Phuket Tourism Recovery

Travel News Asia 3 February 2005

With the aim of restoring the confidence of travellers and reinstate Phuket’s position as one of the world’s leading travel destinations, Kata Karon Hotel’s Business Association, a private group of local hotel owners in the Kata, Kata Noi and Karon beach areas, organized a trip to Phuket for members of the press to witness and experience the current state of Phuket today and its readiness to fully welcome and accommodate tourists and international travellers.

Despite the recent tragedy, many of the famed beach areas of Phuket, have retained their extraordinary beauty and magnificent scenery, with very minimal damage to the living coral and other sea life. in fact, most of the beaches are even cleaner and more pristine than ever before.

For the local community to move forward and thrive again it is essential for tourism to be restored, and many organizations, both public and private united to convey these positive messages. The Kata Karon Hotel’s Business Association, like other associations, realizes that as member of the community, it has duty to support not only its members, but also the community, the region and the nation. The Association worked closely with the Karon Municipality to clean up the beaches as well as the underwater area, while reaching out to the individuals to help them get back on their feet. The effort continues with very close work with the Tourism Authority of Thailand to aim to bring back the business to the Phuket area through various channels and activities.

“We’d like to show to the world the true state of our picturesque coastline and beautiful beaches all around Phuket and invite them to visit us and experience the wonder for themselves,” said Mr.Supachai Yuwaboon, the Deputy Governor of Phuket.

“We are now more than ever ready in every respect to accommodate visitors to the areas of Kata, Kata Noi and Karon in Phuket”, added Mr. Maitree Narukatpichai, President of Kata Karon Hotel’s Business Association. “These areas have not only retained their original beauty but also all facilities are fully restored to provide safe, fun and highly memorable holiday experiences to all. Everyone is working towards this together as can be seen with the various groups involved as well as the support plan from governmental bodies namely the TAT. Much more, though, will be needed in this crucial time of reconstruction, and media outlets are looked to and to reach the reaching out to the mass.”

“It’s the matter of urgency to help revive the businesses in Phuket to restore the livelihood of those living in the area”, said Ms. Suwalai Pinpradab, Director of Tourism Authority of Thailand (Southern Region 4). “We realize that it’s a daunting task and the biggest challenge for many while they are still mourning their losses, but the reconstruction process will take time, therefore we have to start now. We are very appreciative and supportive of the Kata Karon Hotel’s Business Association for spearheading this initiative, and we look to this as one of the beginning steps in bringing Phuket back to the world”.

Currently the Tourism Authority of Thailand, together with the Kata Karon Hotel’s Business Association is promoting special price accommodations in all its 32 member hotels. At the same time the groups are working with Nok Air, a low fare Thai based airline to promote special packages that include roundtrip airfare (Bangkok/Phuket) and accommodations.
