Singapore Visitor Arrivals Hit All-Time Record High in July 2005

Travel News Asia 29 August 2005

Singapore welcomed 876,561 visitors in July 2005, registering a 9.2% growth over the same period a year ago. This is the highest monthly visitor arrivals for the Singapore tourism sector to date. The last time Singapore achieved record figures for monthly visitor arrivals was in July 2004.

July is traditionally a peak travel month for Singapore. The strong performance in July 2005 was driven by double digit growths in arrivals from Vietnam (+47%), India (+31%), the Philippines (+30%), Hong Kong SAR (+29%), Taiwan (+26%), South Korea (+21%) and the USA (+13%). Aggressive in-market tactical promotions and the hosting of the 117th IOC Session in Singapore were other factors contributing to the healthy visitor arrival figures.

Indonesia (192,000), P R China (94,000), Australia (61,000), India (51,000), and Japan (50,000) were Singapores top five visitor-generating markets in July 2005. These markets accounted for more than half of the total visitor arrivals for the month.

Singapore hotels recorded S$109 million in room revenue, an increase of 23.4% over July 2004.

The Average Occupancy Rate (AOR) for hotels was estimated to have reached an all-time high of 89% in July 2005, a 4 percentage points increase over July 2004.

The Average Room Rate (ARR) in July 2005 was estimated at S$136, an increase of 15.3% over July 2004.
