Singapore Airlines taking Inflight Connectivity further

Travel News Asia 29 November 2005

Customers flying to New York via Frankfurt on Singapore Airlines can now literally access the world from their seats, some 35,000 feet in the sky on the airline's SQ 26 (Singapore-Frankfurt-New York JFK) and SQ 25 (New York JFK-Frankfurt-Singapore) services.

Connexion by Boeing, an inflight wireless broadband service that provides customers in all three classes with real-time, high-speed and secure internet connectivity was first offered by Singapore Airlines in March 2005, and by June was available on all services between Singapore and London. In that same month, Singapore Airlines introduced live global TV on international flights using the same system.

Through the Connexion by Boeing facility, customers of Singapore Airlines with wireless-enabled laptops can send and receive emails, connect real-time with their corporate virtual private network or watch BBC World, EuroNews, Eurosportnews and CNBC TV channels live from their laptops.

Upon paying US$29.95, passengers travelling on multi-sector flights e.g. Singapore-Frankfurt-New York aboard Singapore Airlines will only need to pay once to gain unlimited access to inflight internet throughout the flight. There is no extra charge for access to Live Global TV once Connexion by Boeing connection is established.

“With the expansion of the Connexion by Boeing facility to more services in our network, Singapore Airlines is able to offer our customers a variety of choices as to how they would like to spend their flying time. Be it surfing the World Wide Web, accessing a corporate Virtual Private Network or watching live global TV, more customers can now look forward to high quality inflight Wi-Fi experience as they have come to expect and enjoy on the ground,” said Singapore Airlines’ Senior Vice-President, Product and Services, Yap Kim Wah.

Inflight connectivity on Singapore Airlines services will be enhanced further in 2006 as this facility is progressively made available on more services, and when live global TV is extended to customers’ individual seat-back screens.

In addition to live television and wireless broadband internet access, Singapore Airlines’ customers can also select from over 500 entertainment and information options available on the airline’s inflight entertainment system, KrisWorld. Customers can choose from a selection of 60 movies, including many latest release blockbusters, as well as timeless classic and up to 100 TV programmes, 220 music CD albums and audio books, and 85 of the latest video games.
