China Southern Airlines launches New Foundation to Assist Cash-Strapped Students

Travel News Asia 28 June 2005

China Southern Airlines has launched a new “Caring Foundation”, with the first sum of RMB 2.2 Million (US$265,000) donated to students with dire financial difficulties located at 11 major universities around China.

The airline established its foundation with a total sum of RMB 20 Million (US$2.4 Million) and plans to increase its foundation pledge by RMB 5 Million (US$640,000) each year by drawing RMB 0.1 from each passenger airline ticket.

“This foundation has been set up despite the rise of oil price and fierce competition in the aviation market and it’s vitally important for a growing number of people in China to demonstrate their charitable commitments,” said Mr. Liu Shaoyong, Chairman, China Southern Airlines.

China Southern Airlines carried more than 40 Million passengers in 2004.
