Healthier eating at Crowne Plaza hotels in Australia with Body and Soul room service

Travel News Asia 24 November 2005

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle while travelling has been made easier with the launch of Body and Soul, a new room service concept in Crowne Plaza hotels across Australia. The new menu offers more informed choices for in-room dining and guidelines for healthier living while on the road.

Responding to guest feedback, Body and Soul was developed by Crowne Plaza Hotels & Resorts in collaboration with The Food Group Australia, a leading nutrition consultancy servicing the food industry. While it still includes traditional room service favourites, Body and Soul also offers a range of healthier dishes which boast flavour and nutritional goodness. The new menu provides guests with nutrition information ‘per serve’ and practical steps to better nutrition, all important in helping guests to eat smart, stay alert and sustain their energy levels.

“Room service menus traditionally offer standard choices that lean more towards comfort food than dishes you know will form part of a balanced diet. As Australians have become more health-conscious, we have received increasingly frequent requests for healthier options when it comes to in-room dining,” said InterContinental Hotels Group Regional Director of Sales and Marketing Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific, Karin Nielsen.

“Body and Soul represents a greater awareness of the wants and needs of guests, who are part of a growing number of Australians looking to live a healthier life. It addresses a range of mainstream issues, from the fact that as a nation we don’t eat enough fruit and vegetables, through to catering for the many Australians who are at risk of heart disease, have diabetes or are overweight.

“The guest feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Our respondents have appreciated being able to make informed choices about what they eat, and that those choices are delicious and filling,” Ms Nielsen said.

Body and Soul marks the first time The Food Group Australia has extended its expertise to help engineer menus in the hotel sector, and is the first initiative of its type to be introduced as a hotel brand standard in Australia.

According to The Food Group Australia, “Body and Soul can be described as a community health initiative. It makes it easier for people to eat healthier and maintain a more balanced lifestyle while away from home, while showing healthy eating doesn’t have to be boring and can satisfy your physical needs and tastes.

“The cuisine is attractive and multicultural, drawing strongly from traditionally more harmonious Asian and Mediterranean diets. It is not strictly low fat, but instead uses good fats from fish, olive oil and nuts, resulting in nourishing, full-flavour dishes that provide a range of nutrients we need for good health.”

Body and Soul will change quarterly, providing seasonal dishes and fresh tips for healthier living. It will be available at all eleven Crowne Plaza hotels across Australia from early December 2005.
