New Technology Platform for Carlson Hotels Worldwide

Travel News Asia 22 April 2005

Carlson Hotels Worldwide has launched a new, robust technology platform for its global hotel brands - Regent International Hotels; Radisson Hotels & Resorts; Park Plaza Hotels & Resorts; Country Inns & Suites By Carlson; and Park Inn - making it easier for its hotels to operate and maintain information.

Called Harmony Plus, the platform is a complete upgrade of the company’s Harmony system which powered the brands’ property management systems (PMS) as well as enabled Carlson’s many technology initiatives. Harmony Plus is more user friendly by operating in a Windows environment and is web based so hotel staff can access it from any computer connected to the Internet.

“Harmony Plus is the foundation for all future technology hotel applications. We are committed to developing systems that make it easier for our franchisees to do business with us by providing one solution for all of our brands,” said David Sjolander, vice president of Hotel Information Systems, Carlson Hotels Worldwide. “What makes Harmony Plus so powerful is the new web-accessible, browser-based applications that replace many of the existing systems. For example, the data base manager can be easily accessed through the Internet; and our new Customer Service Application offers a hotel specific user interface that provides only the functionality a hotel really needs.” In addition, Harmony Plus will enable many enhancements to the guest experience, including a future version of Carlson’s online check-in program, Express Yourself.

Harmony Plus is driven by the powerful MICROS OPERA Property Management System from MICROS Systems, a leading provider of information technology solutions for the hospitality industry worldwide. “MICROS is excited to continue its long-term partnership with Carlson Hotels Worldwide,” stated Tom Giannopoulos, Chairman and CEO of MICROS Systems, Inc. “MICROS-Fidelio V6 was a strong base for the Harmony system, and MICROS OPERA will be an even stronger foundation as the new generation of Harmony Plus is deployed around the world.”

The full OPERA system will be used in Carlson’s full service brands of Regent, Radisson and Park Plaza; and a simpler, scaled down version called OPERA Xpress will be used by the company’s select service brands of Country Inns & Suites and Park Inn.

Carlson is currently deploying the new system to its hotels by providing web-based training programs, testing and certification.
