Qantas Aircraft Evacuated in Osaka

Search ASIA Travel Tips .com 21 August 2005

A Qantas Airbus A330 aircraft with 178 passengers and 13 crew on board made an emergency landing at Osaka just before 01:00 (local time) this morning, following an indication of smoke in the cargo hold.

The aircraft, which had departed Tokyo bound for Perth, was met by emergency services on arrival in Osaka. The Osaka Control Tower reported smoke on landing so an emergency evacuation was declared as a precaution and emergency slides deployed.

During the evacuation, nine passengers were injured and taken to hospital for medical attention.

Early inspections have shown no sign of smoke or fire, and Qantas has said it believes a faulty reading from one of the cargo sensors may have caused the smoke indication. Local authorities will inspect the aircraft.

Qantas has accommodated the passengers in Osaka while a relief aircraft is flown from Tokyo.
