HKTB and Guangdong Travel Trade join forces to bring 10,000 Mainland Visitors to Hong Kong

Travel News Asia 1 September 2005

The Individual Visit Scheme (IVS) has opened up a huge visitor source for Hong Kong’s tourism industry. Among individual visitors, those from Guangdong Province and the Pearl River Delta have traditionally been most interested in shopping. To further tap the potential of the Mainland market and showcase Hong Kong’s diverse attractions, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) is co-operating with the Guangdong travel trade on the introduction of a series of sightseeing tours in September.

Spearheading the promotions will be the ‘Hong Kong One Day Tour’ on 3 September, which has received an enthusiastic response from the travel trade. To date, close to 10,000 Mainland visitors have already signed up for the tour. The tour itinerary includes visits to Golden Bauhinia Square, The Peak, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Avenue of Stars, Wong Tai Sin Temple, Ocean Park and major malls. To facilitate the visit, Ocean Park will extend its operating hours and arrange a special programme of evening activities.

Since the majority of tour participants will enter and depart Hong Kong through Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau in the morning and evening of 3 September, these border crossings are expected to be busier than during normal weekends. Local residents are encouraged to use the Lo Wu border crossing and cross the border at non-peak hours. Also, visits by the participants to different attractions during the day may result in heavier traffic in the vicinity of each attraction. Motorists are also being advised to pay attention to traffic conditions.
