JW Marriott Mumbai launches new 'Quan Spa'

Travel News Asia 14 December 2005

Some cultures recognize that the place where rivers meet is a special place where natural energy flourishes. Although now one landmass, three centuries ago the seven islands of Mumbai were linked by natural harbors, creeks and lakes. The newly opened Quan Spa at the JW Marriott Hotel Mumbai aims to recreate those special places by harnessing the natural healing forces of water and combining these with life enhancing therapies to help guests relax.

Drawing inspiration from Ayurveda, “The Science of Life” that has existed in India for over 6,000 years and traditional western health, wellness and beauty rituals, spa guests at Quan will be spoiled with a choice of treatments each designed to have a positive effect on mind and body.

The name Quan comes from the Chinese word meaning “the source of pure water”. True to its name at Quan guests find Vichy showers, baths and a product range from Thalgo, based on ingredients from the ocean. The Ayurvedic and Western body and face treatments are complemented by a range of Lifestyle Therapies including Yoga, Pranayama, Ayurvedic Nutrition Analysis and Meditation.

The Spa

Quan Mumbai is the first urban spa retreat for the spa group. Complementing the resort spas in Sanya (China), Koh Samui (Thailand) and the soon to be opened flagship spa in Bali (Indonesia), the spa comprises a 3200 square feet (297 sq meters) tranquility zone where guests are encouraged to leave their decision making at the door.

Designed in collaboration with Zoran Dzunic, the spa successfully integrates design with operational use. The adage “form follows function” can be seen in all areas of the spa from the reception and waiting areas through to the treatments rooms.

Subtle influences of India’s religious and cultural heritage are integrated into its modern, cutting edge design. From the signature welcome beverage, a non-caffeinated saffron infused iced tea, to the use of Chakra symbology identifying each room with a harmonious but individual character including the use of different accent colors, whether they are there for one treatment or a package of treatments, spa guests are invited to relax and allow the spa team to help them escape from the pressures of the outside world.

The spa comprises 8 spacious, private treatment suites (6 for Western style treatments, 2 for Ayurveda), a Vichy Shower Room and a Couple’s Room. The couple’s room includes a day bed for relaxation breaks between treatments, a free-standing bath and a hip mini-bar stocked with Champagne, chocolates and other luxe goodies that are available for use and charged at the end of a visit.

Behind translucent perspex doors, allowing form but not detail to be viewed (ensuring the privacy of their guests), treatment rooms contain private shower and changing facilities. Room fit-out is kept to a minimum relying on the use of color and light to provide a calming effect on the guest.

The spa incorporates a Juice Bar where not only spa guests, but also hotel guests, outside guests and those using the Fitness Area and Male and Female Relaxation Areas (incorporating steam, sauna, Jacuzzi, plunge pools and relaxation rooms) can choose from the array of fresh juices, waters and spa cuisine.

Spa Treatment Highlights

A range of baths is offered for single guests and couples in the luxuriously appointed Couples Room with it’s free-standing bath. The Aroma Fusion Bath, Rose & Ashwaganda Bath and Ocean Detox Bath all include Himalayan Floral Tonics, both added to the bath itself and as facial spritzers to provide a true feeling of renewal.

Abhyanga, an Ayurvedic detoxifying treatment using warm medicated oil can be performed with a single therapist (2-hand Abhyanga) or two therapists (4-hand Abhyanga) which elevates this into a special treatment and one in line with how it is delivered in a traditional setting.

The body and facial treatments using Thalgo provide a range of benefits from detoxification, renewal and relaxation, relying on marine ingredients including marine algae, pure sea salts, Spirulina and different types of marine mud. The Marine Rainshower Body Scrub, performed under the soothing water jets of a Vichy Shower with a Revitalizing Ocean Body Wrap aims to improve general well-being.

A range of Spa Packages is offered, based on the five elements of fire, water, air, earth and space. These packages are tailored to enhance their balancing properties for the appropriate dosha (or body type) and include a mix of traditional spa treatments, Ayurvedic treatments and lifestyle therapies such as Yoga. These last in duration from 2½ hours.

Guests wishing for something longer and more luxurious can choose the all day package which includes a choice of a limousine collection or drop-off within the Mumbai city area.
