Qatar Airways to increase Capacity on German Routes

Travel News Asia 13 March 2005

From the start of its Summer 2005 schedules, Qatar Airways is to increase the number of scheduled passenger flights from six a week to daily between Doha, capital of the State of Qatar, and Frankfurt. The route will be served with an Airbus A300 in a three-class configuration of First, Business and Economy.

In addition, the Doha – Munich – Vienna route, currently operated five-times-a-week, will be de-linked and replaced by dedicated non-stop services to both European cities.

Munich will continue to be served five-times-a-week with an A300 in a three-class configuration, while Vienna will have four flights a week operated by an Airbus A319 configured in Business and Economy.

The changes are all effective from 27 March 2005.

The recent round of bilateral talks held in Bonn resulted in Qatar Airways being allowed to increase the number of flights between the two countries to 21 services a week, for implementation in three phases. The talks concluded with Qatar Airways being allowed to operate dedicated freighter flights to any point in Germany from the start of the summer season.

In the first phase, the airline will be allowed to introduce a third destination in Germany during Summer 2005 and operate a total of 14 direct scheduled flights a week.

For the second phase beginning Winter 2005, the number of cities served by Qatar Airways in Germany can increase to four, and weekly frequencies raised to 18 flights.

In the third and final phase, starting Winter 2006, the number of weekly flights operated by Qatar Airways can be increased to 21 and a fifth German city added to the network.

From 27 March 2005, Qatar Airways can operate dedicated freighters four-times-a-week to any point in Germany, rising to seven a week from Winter 2006.

Speaking at the ITB Berlin, Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al Baker said he was delighted to see the airline’s Five Star brand spread its wings across Germany over the next two years, “I applaud the decision by the relevant authorities to give us additional traffic rights and am pleased to begin implementing the changes from the start of the summer season on 27 March 2005.”
