Westin Hotels and Reebok Partner to Launch New Fitness Product

Travel News Asia 11 October 2005

Westin Hotels & Resorts and Reebok have formed a multi-faceted partnership to develop one of the travel industry's most extensive fitness and wellness initiatives. WestinWORKOUT Powered by Reebok features new custom designed fitness facilities, fully equipped WestinWORKOUT Rooms that encourage guests to work out in the privacy of their room using a variety of advanced cardio and strength equipment, and a Reebok-designed workout regimen for travelers. WestinWORKOUT Powered by Reebok launches in October in Westin hotels in Asia Pacific.

Work Up a Sweat Without Leaving Your Room

Every WestinWORKOUT Room allows guests to maintain their fitness regime by working out in the privacy of their own room and features an indoor Cycle or Treadmill and a custom-designed fitness shelf that holds adjustable dumbbells, resistance tubing, a stability ball, yoga mat and additional Reebok workout equipment. This convenient, private exercise environment also features a fitness library by Rodale Press, a leading publisher of information on healthy, active lifestyles, which includes several books and magazines including Runner's World, Bicycling Magazine and a customized local running map.

"We know that two-thirds of travelers want to work out while on the road yet most of them don't make it to the gym," said Sue Brush, Senior Vice President for Westin. "With WestinWORKOUT Rooms, hotel guests are now able to fit their regular cardio, strength training, or exercise routines into their hectic travel schedules with the added luxury of a private workout at any time."

The new WestinWORKOUT Rooms are available for an additional charge, starting from around $20 above market room rates and varying slightly by market.

Run with Westin

In addition, Westin has partnered with Rodale Press' renowned Runner's World magazine to design certified WestinWORKOUT Runner's World Maps that outline recommended three and five-mile jogging/walking routes in the hotel's vicinity in every city. These handy pocket-sized maps contain suggested routes, level of difficulty and local points of interest. Also available at select hotels is RunWESTIN, a complimentary program offering guided, scenic three-mile morning runs three days a week. Led by Westin's Running Concierge, the run includes a warm up session with Reebok training tips and can be customized into a fun individual or group run.

"Most runners prefer the outdoors to get their run in but they're intimidated by an unfamiliar city. We've developed custom running maps for every Westin hotel and resort that plots three and five mile courses from the hotel," said Andy Hersham, Publisher of Runner's World.

As a post workout treat, all guests will receive refreshing bottled water and towels to help them cool down following the scenic jaunt.

WestinWORKOUT Gym: New Equipment, Sleek Design and Cardio Theater

Custom designed for Westin, the new fitness rooms are inspired by upscale health clubs in major cities throughout the region. Features of the WestinWORKOUT Powered by Reebok Gym include state-of-the-art equipment designed to provide optimum strength conditioning and ensure a thorough cardio workout, a Reebok Core Training Zone, a unique center created to improve strength, flexibility, balance and aerobic conditioning as well as sleek, airy design that aims to remind travelers of the best health clubs in their home towns with calming colors, modern furnishings, serene art, digital music, Bose speakers, towels, bottled water and new magazines and newspapers.

Survey Says Hotel Fitness Facilities Need to Shape Up

Why the focus on fitness? A survey of 300 business travelers conducted by Lieberman Research Worldwide for Westin found that hotel fitness rooms often disappoint. "Hotel fitness rooms have traditionally been a low priority - converted meeting rooms crammed with out-of-date equipment - and far from inspiring," said Miguel Ko, President, Asia Pacific, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Westin's parent. "Working out is a way of life for many upscale travelers and we think there is an opportunity to further distinguish Westin from the pack by offering terrific workout facilities and fitness programs. In fact, 69% of business travelers said that a 'state-of-the-art' fitness facility in a hotel would favor that hotel in their selection process, so we think this program will help us earn a greater share of customers."
